In 2016, the City of Canal Winchester initiated a process to create a downtown plan for Old Town. This planning process will inform the development of a final plan reflective of the ambitions of City residents, businesses, and leaders. This plan will guide future planning, land use, and policy making related to Old Town.
The following provides an overview of the planning process, including a description of visioning, the benefits of visioning, and who will be involved in the downtown plan.
WHAT IS A DOWNTOWN PLAN?
A downtown plan helps a community define the potential of city’s core downtown district through an engaging process that brings people together to talk about their ideas and aspirations for the future of the area. It is the vision of what a community wants to become and the steps needed to realize that vision of those who live, work, and play in Old Town.
Using a variety of tools, a visioning process will build consensus around a desired outcome, future, or image. The process is built extensively on public and stakeholder involvement. It asks community residents and stakeholders:
“What are your ideas for the future?”
“What kind of community do you want to be part of?”
Exploring these questions will inform the foundation of the vision for the future of Old Town.
WHY HAVE A VISION?
Visioning helps communities, organizations, and residents identify what makes their community unique and share that identity with the region. The visioning process has the following objectives:
PREPARING THE PLAN
As part of the planning process, information and data is gathered from prior planning documents, the US Census, and maps produced by the City and County. Meanwhile, current views and opinions are collected through a community-wide online survey, an interactive project website, and meetings and forums where residents are invited to provide input for the Canal Winchester Old Town Plan.
At the end of this process, the planning team will deliver a document which includes an overview of public participation and provides targeted implementation strategies, including projects, programs, and policies, to achieve the collectively desired vision for downtown Canal Winchester.
WHO IS INVOLVED?
City administration and staff will oversee the downtown planning process. The City has retained OHM Advisors to assist throughout the planning process.
OHM Advisors is an integrated engineering, architecture, and planning firm headquartered in Livonia, MI with offices located throughout the Midwest. OHM brings more than 50 years of public and private sector expertise, forward thinking, and insightful counsel to help develop the Canal Winchester Old Town Plan.
Residents and stakeholders of Canal Winchester are encouraged to participate in the downtown planning process to share their opinions and ideas for the future growth and development of the downtown. Their input is vital to the success of the Old Town Plan.
The public is encouraged to participate in the Big Idea Gathering meeting on May 25th. This will serve as the best opportunity to share your vision for the future of Canal Winchester’s Old Town open house.
